Pictured to the viewers left is Stephen Manz and to the right, Mark Bestul. Stephen Manz will be remaining as a graduate assistant in the practical department of the seminary next year, working on an advanced degree. Mark Bestul is 'pastor-elect' of Calvary Lutheran Church of Elgin, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Pastor-elect Bestul was a vicar at Calvary Lutheran during his third year of seminary training and has now accepted the congregation's call to be the pastor of this congregation of about 650 baptized members. During the week of graduation, Mark was also recognized as the recipient of five of the seven academic awards presented. Congratulations to both men! Our Lord bless you as you serve His Church. PHOTO

2007 Catechetical Examinations
Each year catechetical students being presented for the Rite of Confirmation are examined by Pastor in the presence of the Board of Elders. During these 20-30 minutes sessions the catechetical student --without being provided questions ahead of time----is asked questions of substance regarding the doctrines of the Lutheran faith. For example: What are the two natures of Christ and why is each important? What is present in the Lord's Supper and how do we differ from Roman Catholicism in our convictions concerning it? What are the attributes of Scripture? Pictured: two of our catechetical students at their examinations this year. PHOTOS

During the 6-7 week spring session he will teach the same class at one of the other congregations. The classes taught cover these categories of study: Doctrinal, Biblical, Historical, and Practical. Two classes are being taught at LCOS during this fall session: Rev. Timothy Beck of Richmond is teaching a Wed. eve class on "Apologetics." Rev. John Bestul of San Pablo is teaching a class on "The Reformer and the Reformation" [above photo] on Thursday mornings. Each class has over 30 students in it. Our pastor, Rev. A CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE
Over 115 gathered on Sunday, June 11, at The Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Cupertino, CA, for an evening dinner and ceremony celebrating the Holy Estate of Matrimony. After trying to identify over 50 displayed wedding pictures, numerous comical toasts preceded a superb wedding dinner during which 'love songs' from the decades were to be identified. After the dinner, a ceremony with wedding processionals, solos, duets, group singing, remembrance of vows, etc. celebrated the estate. The Candle of Unity was lit by Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Pahl celebrating their 65th anniversary this year. After the ceremony wedding gifts were opened [a drawing], a wedding cake was cut by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Much celebrating their 64th anniversary. The evening ended with a remembrance of spouses who have gone before us and the doxology. A great evening for couples, widows/widowers and singles. PHOTOS
